Investment Philosophy

The University of Tokyo, which was established as Japan’s first domestic, modern university (hereinafter referred to as “UTokyo”), celebrated its 140th year in 2017. While UTokyo’s charter advocates itself as an institute “that services the global public,” it aims to progress ever onward over the next 70 years. Moreover, the university’s purpose is to also form a global stronghold for collaborative creation of knowledge that contributes to the future society of humankind, as well as to play an active role in becoming a starting point for knowledge-intensive social change.
Under the public-private innovation program (University investment business) from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, UTokyo Innovation Platform Co., Ltd., which was established as a funding business of the University of Tokyo (hereinafter referred to UTokyo IPC), is developing activities on a daily basis as a strategy to achieve the goals set out by the university.
AS an individual who decides to take on this mission together as a member of UTokyo or an individual who has established themselves as a member who is a responsible investor, the UTokyo IPC has provided the following investment concepts in order to develop activities as an organization that can be trusted by the community.

1. Through various investment activities such as funding for the purposes of the incubation and education of venture companies, venture capital funding that provides venture assistance, or funding with the purpose of creating new businesses in cooperation with companies, research institutes, and other organizations, our company plans to give back to society by providing technology and education created by UTokyo, research results, and other interests that benefit the community.

2. Our company aims to make contributions for social sustainability through the promotion of investment businesses that take Environment, Society and Governance (ESG) into consideration for the global public services provided by UTokyo or as a responsible presence in society. As part of this, we aim to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by by all United Nations Member States in 2015.

3. From the position of carrying out investment through invested capital, our company ensures proper earnings on a whole through investment businesses, the contribution to investors, as well as the continuity of funding businesses.
